Why The Ride For Roswell?

The simple fact is that one in two men and one in three women in America will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Cancer is the leading cause of death from disease in children ages 1 to 14. Chances are good, then, since you’re on The Ride For Roswell website, that you or someone you know has undergone or is undergoing treatment for this disease.

Another simple fact is that the funds you raise through The Ride For Roswell are earmarked for research and patient care at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Research for cancer cures is going on right now, as you’re reading this. Patients at Roswell Park (there were more than 30,000 last year) also routinely benefit from “quality of life” enhancements made possible by Ride fundraising.

As a rider or donor, your gifts generously support Roswell Park Cancer Institute and its mission to understand, prevent and cure cancer.

Accelerating Research Advances

Thanks to Ride riders and donors in 2011, 23 scientific studies were awarded critically needed funding by a committee of top scientists, clinicians and faculty members. The studies were awarded funds after a competitive application process to find research with the greatest potential to find cures and save lives.

Supporting Patients and Families

In addition, 30 “Quality-of-Life” programs received donor funding to help improve the care and experience of cancer patients and their families.

Meeting Urgent Needs

Along with funding needed research and patient programs, money raised by this year’s 2012 Ride will also support the construction of an urgently needed new Chemotherapy Infusion Clinic. The state-of-the-art Chemo-Infusion Clinic will provide the additional space needed to serve Roswell Park’s growing patient base and will reduce wait times for these life-saving services. It will feature a picturesque view overlooking the City of Buffalo and Lake Erie.

Did You Know?

Ride donations also help Roswell Park to obtain additional grant dollars to continue its studies. In fact, for every $1 donated to research from The Ride, an additional $7 was secured from other sources thanks to the laboratory results you helped generate!

It’s big things and small things, but the main thing is that your Ride fundraising enables Roswell to shine light in dark corners – and that gives hope to patients and tools to the Roswell doctors and scientists whose life work is the conquest of cancer.

See the following pages in this section of the site for some examples of how Ride funds have been or are being used.
