  • The 2003 Extra Mile Club has 39 members
  • New & Notable: The Extra Mile Club is established to recognize riders who raise $1,000 or more. Kunle Odunsi, MD, PhD, is the principal investigator for Roswell Park studies to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a vaccine in patients with ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancers.
The “Big T” made its first appearance in 2003.

Year 7: 2002

  • 2,232 riders raised $326,450
  • Top fundraiser: Peter O’Keefe – $9,145
  • Top youth fundraiser: Daniel Scime
  • Top team: Blast the Mass
  • New & notable: The Ride sees its first year of decreased fundraising in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. The 100-mile Century Route is dropped; it will reappear in 2010.
Ham radio operators have been one of the key volunteer groups responsible for The Ride’s success.

Year 6: 2001

  • 2,342 riders raise $330,421
  • Top fundraiser: Peter O’Keefe – $8,442
  • Top youth fundraiser: Daniel Scime – $1,621
  • Top team: Roswell Park Employees and Friends
  • New & Notable: Rain and temperatures in the low 50s put a damper on The Ride. Norma Nowak, PhD, director of the DNA Microarray and Genomics Resource at Roswell Park, collaborates on landmark studies to complete the human genome sequencing effort.

Year 4: 1999

  • 2,190 riders raise $237,548
  • Top fundraiser: Matt Petroski – $3,609
  • Top youth fundraiser: Katy DeGirolamo
  • Top team: Pedalin’ Around the Park
  • New & Notable: The Ride has its first website and its first team t-shirt contest, with Carly’s Angels winning for best slogan: “Friends don’t let friends fight cancer alone.”
 
Matt Petroski (top center) was The Ride’s top fundraiser in 1999 and 2000.

Year 3: 1998

  • 1,749 riders raise $191,357
  • Top fundraiser: Mike Ventre – $2,884
  • Top youth fundraiser: Katy DeGirolamo – $885
  • Top team: Roswell Centennial Riders
  • New & Notable: Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Roswell Park’s founding, New York State Governor George E. Pataki dedicates the new 133-Bed hospital, centerpiece of the $241.5-million Roswell Park Major Modernization Project, the largest health-related project ever undertaken by New York State.
 
Mike Ventre was the top fundraiser for the 1998 Ride.

Year 2: 1997

  • 1,214 riders raise $166,565
  • Top fundraiser and top youth fundraiser: Katy DeGirolamo – $3,569.
  • Top team: Michael’s Angels
  • New & Notable: The Ride adds two new routes, a 26-mile and a 46-mile. David C. Hohn, MD becomes the 13th President and Chief Executive Officer of Roswell Park.
Michael’s Angels has the longest streak of consecutive appearances by any team in Ride history.

Year 1: 1996

  • 986 riders raise $101,018
  • Top fundraiser and top youth fundraiser: Katy DeGirolamo – $2,291
  • Top team: Neil’s Non-chalant Riders
  • New & Notable: The Ride debuts on an overcast Saturday morning in late June with 9-mile, 33-mile and 62.5-mile routes. Founder Mitch Flynn, co-chair John Farmelo, route designer John Houghtaling, and volunteer Sally Russell lead the small group that organizes the first event. News 4 Buffalo anchor Jacquie Walker is honorary chair.’
Pediatric patient Katy DeGirolamo was the top fundraiser in The Ride’s first year.
